Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia of the foot and may be located at insertion into the calcaneus (heel bone) or under the arch.

This may be due to chronic (long term) repetitive stress or an acute injury which may lead to a partial rupture. If it is due to an acute injury there will be signs of bruising.

●Causes may include:
  1. -poor biomechanics
  2. -overuse
  3. -Sever’s Disease
  4. -Achilles tendonitis
  5. -Tight gastrocnemius (calf muscles)
  6. -Excessive pronation (inward rolling of the feet)
  7. -Hypermobility (excessive movement within the feet; weak/lax ligaments)
  8. -Unsuitable footwear
  9. -Flat feet
  10. -High arched feet.
  11. -Tight plantar fasciitis

●Treatment may include:
  1. -Taping/strapping
  2. -Footwear advice
  3. -Stretching and strengthening exercises
  4. -Referral for X-Ray, ultrasound
  5. -Massage therapy may be advised
  6. -Orthotics, ……… stretch
